How to Arrive Ready: The Pre-Trip Routine for High-Stakes Business Travel
24 August 2026 |  Travel News
The best business travel routine starts two days before departure, not at the airport. What happens in the 48 hours before a major international trip, and in the first hours after landing, shapes the outcome of the meetings far more than most people assume.
Sleep banking before you fly
You cannot undo a poor night’s sleep on the plane, but you can get ahead of it. Adding 30 to 60 minutes of sleep on each of the two nights before a long-haul departure builds a buffer that carries through the flight and into the first day. It is a small adjustment with a disproportionate effect, and it costs nothing beyond going to bed slightly earlier.
Choosing departure time on purpose
An evening departure that lands the following evening allows one ordinary night’s sleep before the working day starts. That single choice, made at the point of booking rather than left to the cheapest option, is one of the most effective parts of any business travel routine. If the schedule allows it, it is worth protecting.
What to eat and drink on the flight
Eating on the destination’s clock, not the departure city’s, helps the body adjust faster. Lighter meals sit better at altitude, and water taken steadily throughout the flight does more good than any single remedy taken once. Alcohol and heavy, rich food both work against a body already dealing with dry cabin air and disrupted rhythm.
Structuring arrival day
Protect the first few hours
Wherever the itinerary allows it, the first few hours after landing should be light on demands. A short walk, natural daylight and a normal-paced start do more for the rest of the trip than pushing straight into back-to-back meetings on no real sleep.
A worked example
Melatonin at 10pm New York time. Bed by 11pm. Wake at 7am New York time, feeling roughly like noon UK time, which is manageable. Day one: a light morning, full performance from noon. Day two: full performance from the first meeting. Return: a daytime flight home, arriving the next morning, with the first full day back in London protected from consequential meetings.
This is not a difficult programme. It requires three deliberate decisions: departure time, arrival day schedule, and return routing. None of them cost significantly more than the alternatives. All of them produce measurably better outcomes.
“A good business travel routine is not about doing more. It is about deciding three or four things on purpose, ahead of time, instead of leaving them to chance at the gate.”
