The UK Business Traveller’s Guide to San Francisco: Tech, Time Zones and the Bay Area Explained

2 July 2026  |  Travel News

Technology and software is the fastest-growing segment of UK-US corporate travel, posting 11% year-on-year growth in business travel spend in 2025. For UK businesses in tech, venture capital, life sciences and professional services, UK business travel to San Francisco is an increasingly regular commitment. This guide covers what matters before you land: the geography problem most first-time visitors get wrong, which airport to use, what the 8-hour time zone actually costs your performance, and how the Bay Area’s business culture differs from anything you will encounter in New York or London.

The Geography Problem: San Francisco Is Not Silicon Valley

San Francisco is a city. Silicon Valley is a 30-to-50-mile corridor running south through Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and San Jose. They are not interchangeable. If your meetings are at Apple in Cupertino, Google in Mountain View or Meta in Menlo Park, San Francisco is not where you should stay. Map your meetings before booking your hotel. If they are in the city, stay in San Francisco. If they are in South Bay or Silicon Valley proper, stay in Palo Alto or Santa Clara.

UK Business Travel to San Francisco: Entry and ESTA

UK passport holders require a valid ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before boarding any US-bound flight. It costs $21, is valid for two years and must be applied for via the official CBP portal. Apply at least 72 hours before departure.

Flights: London to San Francisco

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both operate direct services from London Heathrow to San Francisco International (SFO) in approximately 10 to 11 hours. United Airlines also operates Heathrow to SFO with its Polaris business class product — worth considering for United frequent flyers with onward US connections. Manchester also has direct service to SFO, removing the Heathrow connection cost for businesses based outside London. Confirm aircraft type before booking — at 10 to 11 hours, the cabin product matters considerably.

SFO, OAK and SJC: Which Airport to Use

San Francisco International (SFO) handles most transatlantic arrivals. BART rail connects SFO to downtown San Francisco — roughly 30 minutes and the most reliable transfer option. A car service runs 35 to 55 minutes depending on traffic. San Jose International (SJC) is closest to Silicon Valley proper and significantly faster for meetings in Sunnyvale, Mountain View or San Jose, but not served by direct UK transatlantic flights — a domestic connection trade-off worth calculating.

San Francisco Business Culture: What UK Executives Need to Know

San Francisco has a distinctly Californian approach to business that can feel disorienting to UK executives. Formality is low — smart casual is standard even in senior meetings. First names are immediate. Hierarchy is less visible. The culture places a strong emphasis on vision, mission and the larger narrative of what a company is building. UK executives who lead with credentials before establishing shared purpose can find the room slower to engage than expected.

The tech culture values directness and brevity. Long slide decks are not the format. The meeting often starts with “what are you building and why does it matter?” Get to that answer quickly. San Francisco also has a strong environmental consciousness — climate and sustainability come up in meetings in ways they would not in London financial services.

“The UK executives who do best in San Francisco are the ones who understand they are in a different cultural environment — not a relaxed version of London, but a genuinely different way of doing business. The preparation that matters is not the pitch deck. It is understanding who you are meeting and what they care about.”

The 8-Hour Time Zone: Managing It Properly

San Francisco is 8 hours behind the UK — the most demanding time zone on any direct transatlantic service. Experienced travellers build in a recovery buffer before high-stakes meetings. An evening arrival with a light first day is significantly more productive than back-to-back meetings from day one.
