UK passport holders require a valid ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before boarding any US-bound flight. It costs $21, is valid for two years and must be applied for via the official CBP portal. Apply at least 72 hours before departure.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both operate direct services from London Heathrow to San Francisco International (SFO) in approximately 10 to 11 hours. United Airlines also operates Heathrow to SFO with its Polaris business class product — worth considering for United frequent flyers with onward US connections. Manchester also has direct service to SFO, removing the Heathrow connection cost for businesses based outside London. Confirm aircraft type before booking — at 10 to 11 hours, the cabin product matters considerably.
SFO, OAK and SJC: Which Airport to Use
San Francisco International (SFO) handles most transatlantic arrivals. BART rail connects SFO to downtown San Francisco — roughly 30 minutes and the most reliable transfer option. A car service runs 35 to 55 minutes depending on traffic. San Jose International (SJC) is closest to Silicon Valley proper and significantly faster for meetings in Sunnyvale, Mountain View or San Jose, but not served by direct UK transatlantic flights — a domestic connection trade-off worth calculating.
San Francisco Business Culture: What UK Executives Need to Know
San Francisco has a distinctly Californian approach to business that can feel disorienting to UK executives. Formality is low — smart casual is standard even in senior meetings. First names are immediate. Hierarchy is less visible. The culture places a strong emphasis on vision, mission and the larger narrative of what a company is building. UK executives who lead with credentials before establishing shared purpose can find the room slower to engage than expected.
The tech culture values directness and brevity. Long slide decks are not the format. The meeting often starts with “what are you building and why does it matter?” Get to that answer quickly.
